Buchfassung

Miavista: art of seeing

«The modern world thinks of art as very important - something close to the meaning of life. Evidence of this elevated regard can be found in the opening of new museums, the channeling of significant government resources towards the production and display of art, the desire on the part of the guardians of art to increase access to works (especially for the benefit of children and minority groups), the prestige of academic art theory and the high valuations of the commercial art market.»

«Despite all this, our encounters with art do not always go as well as they might. We are likely to leave highly respected museums and exhibitions feeling underwhelmed, or even bewildered and inadequate, wondering why the transformational experience we had anticipated did not occur.»

(Allan de Botton and John Armstrong)

In their book «Art as Therapy» de Botton and Armstrong argue that we as individual art lovers and artists are not to blame for not knowing enough about art or for a lack of passion for art. Our sense of "failing in art" has more to do with us not asking an important question: What is the purpose of art? De Botton and Armstrong understand art as a tool to extend our capacities as human beings. For them art can help to compensate for our weaknesses and to inspire us "to become better versions of ourselves".

In «Miavista: art of seeing» I present pictures from my photo diary. I look at them through the eyes of de Botton and Armstrong and explore new possibilities of how to interpret these images by adding short captions.
